Some Administered Projects

The diversity and breadth of the local, national and international involvements of MERF can be seen in some of its projects:

  • The Coastal and Fisheries Management Project in Lingayen Gulf involving 5 municipalities funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy;
  • The Philippine Environmental Governance Project 2 ( CRM Sector) assisting over 35 municipal and provincial local government units and communities in Baler Bay, Camotes Sea, Illana Bay, Sibugay Bay, Davao Gulf and the island provinces of ARMM funded by USAID-DAI;
  • Environmental assessment and monitoring of Champion Reef for Brunei Shell;
  • Assessment of eco-sensitive areas in NW Palawan and oil spill modeling for SPEX;
  • Bioeconomic modeling work on Land Ocean Interaction in the Coastal Zone (LOICZ) through WOTRO;
  • Drugs from the sea and biotechnology work with the National Institute of Health National Cancer Drug Discovery Group;
  • Reducing degradation trends in the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand with funding through the United Nations Environment Program – Global Environment Facility (GEF);
  • Assessment of the seaweed resources and farming as livelihood in the Balabac biodiversity conservation corridor funded by Conservation International;
  • Coral Reef Targeted Research and Capacity Building for Management Program with involvement in the various projects with funding from the World Bank and GEF.

Aside from environmental management related work, MERF has been engaged in a variety of independent monitoring and evaluation work, especially in marine protected areas through the UNDP small grants program, the USAID-DENR Coastal Management Project (CRMP), the USAID-DENR Environmental Governance Project 1 (EcoGov 1), and the USAID-DA-BFAR FISH Project.
